An interior renovation of a four bedroom, four bathroom, 1960s modernist house in the hills for a family of four—a journalist couple, their son, and the wife’s father—who wanted to update their home to suit their needs and enhance its qualities with some of their own style and taste. The design entailed selective alterations to the plan and new fixtures and finishes throughout the house.

On the lower level a new cork floor was installed, along with new millwork pieces made distinctly for each space that afford storage and surfaces for display.


Natural steel elements original to the structure, including the stair and windows, were refurbished and painted.

A separate living quarters at the front of the house was revamped with warm materials and a nautical theme. Plywood panels line the walls and ceilings.


The wood-paneled space opens out to a new private patio space walled off between the house and street.

Colorful built-in millwork in the son’s bedroom includes cabinets, shelves, and a desk, plus a concealed a door to the ensuite bathroom.


The bathrooms were all revamped with updated fixtures and unique finishes. In the kitchen, new appliances pair with bespoke natural wood cabinetry and a stone countertop.


Each room takes on a different version of the bright and tranquil vibe of the hillside house.
